WHO Declares Monkeypox a Global Health Emergency: What You Need to Know

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Mpox has been reported in the DRC for more than a decade, and the number of cases reported each year has increased steadily over that period. Last year, reported cases increased significantly, and already the number of cases reported so far this year has exceeded last year’s total, with more than 15,600 cases and 537 deaths.”

Although Mpox is a viral infection that typically causes mild disease, the critical need for public health awareness cannot be overemphasised. Understanding the symptoms, recognizing early signs, and taking preventive measures are essential in controlling the spread of the virus.

Monkeypox symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, which can progress to more severe complications if not treated early. To protect yourself and others, it’s essential to stay informed, recognize symptoms early, and seek vaccination if you are at risk.

Prevention is key. Avoid close contact with individuals who may be infected, practice good hygiene, and follow public health guidelines. Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to control the outbreak and protect vulnerable populations.

Together, we can help curb the spread of Monkeypox. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and take action to protect your health and the health of your community.
