TOGETHER WE CAN RESTORE MORE SIGHTS

10/10/19

World Vision Day, 2019

VISION 2020: The Right to Sight was launched by World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999, as a global initiative that aims to eliminate avoidable blindness and its causes by the year 2020. And the World Sight Day was also initiated as an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment, and this is held on the second Thursday in October each year. This year, the international theme is Vision First! Vision 2020 will be using social media and the #WorldSightDay hashtag to share information about eye health and vision care, and highlight the important work of the sector and our members. More awareness on eye care could help prevent visual impairment.

To help the world eliminate avoidable blindness, Sakinah Medical Outreach started the ‘GIFT OF SIGHT’ project; to sensitize the general public on eye care practice, and organise free eye screening exercise and cataract surgeries for the less privilege. We have been able to organize 4 community medical outreach in 3 different state in Nigeria; Ilorin, Kwara state (2015 and 2019), Zaria, Kaduna state (2016), and Abeokuta, Ogun state (2018). More than 300 cataract surgeries have been done and hundreds of free eye drops and glasses have been gifted out to restore the sight of the needy.

Together we can restore more sight.
